STATION #3: RED BARN & WOODED TRAILS
Barn
The Red Barn houses 11 stalls, all of which get cleaned daily. The mess is cleaned out, fresh dust is put down, waters are refilled, and a flake of hay is placed in each stall every morning. We have a volunteer sign-up for stall cleaning. We also incorporate stall cleaning into a lot of lessons and programs because it teaches people how to care for the herd.
The feed freezer is yep you guessed it- where all their food and treats are kept. The whiteboard lists how much of what feed each horse gets, including any supplements or restrictions. Example: Res takes arthritis meds, and Sparrow has hay allergies. At different times of the year, she has to be kept off it and have alfalfa instead.
All of the grooming tools and supplies are kept across from the cooler. The horses get groomed regularly especially before being saddled. It is important to get the dirt off because it could become painful on their skin when under a heavy saddle and rider. Typically to groom a horse you first use a curry comb to loosen the dirt, brush their bodies, manes, and tails, and clean their feet with a hoof pick.
Tack Room: Equipment and tack storage, meeting/activity space. This is where we keep saddles (English and Western), saddle pads, bridles, and helmets.
FUN FACT: We are doing some Friday night Yoga in the Barn sessions this summer!
(follow us on Facebook- we will be posting dates and sign-ups for these classes soon!)
Trails
We have about 12 acres in wooded trails. There have been 2 eagle scouts that have helped us add things to the trails such as a bridge and a trail map.
