Programs
Our mission is to nurture body, mind and spirit through God and horses.
We value all animals as sentient beings and partners in the programs and services we offer. They are our family members and co-workers! Their role on our farm is not as a tool for desired movement to benefit people, or as vehicles for entertainment and recreation. Therefore, our programs and services reflect the values that we strongly believe in.
Before starting any program at OVS, potential participants will go through an application/enrollment process. We do this to make sure the program is a safe option for all involved (participant, horse, volunteers, staff) and to make sure the participant understands what is offered in the program they are applying for.
We are fortunate to have a group of dedicated volunteers that help with EVERYTHING that goes on at OVS. Volunteers are given specific training to do the different jobs around the farm.
*Volunteers for Adaptive Horsemanship go through horse leader and side-walker training
*Volunteers for Equine Assisted Learning programs go through horse leader training and trauma informed volunteer training.
Farm Wellness
OVS is located on a working farm. We care for a fruit orchard, numerous bee hives, a greenhouse, and a variety of farm animals in addition to the horses. Being on the farm allows people the opportunity to connect with and be a part of something bigger than themselves. Classes and events are offered throughout the year and are focused on helping people improve their mental, physical, and spiritual wellness. Wellness classes and events are not therapy.
Equine Assisted Learning
This program teaches life skills for educational, professional, or personal growth through experiential learning activities. Our trained staff members plan activities for each group depending on their specific needs and goals. The horse-human interaction in these activities help participants become more aware of their own bodies and what their body communicates to the horse. Essentially, they learn to strengthen their connection with the horse through communication in a language the horse understands. Participants are taught how to be conscious of regulation and intention, and how to recognize when the horse is giving consent through connection. This is a non-therapy program.
Adaptive Horsemanship
Includes instruction in both ground skills and riding skills with an additional focus on the partnership with the horse. This program is specifically for children and adults with diverse needs, and therefore the classes are adapted according to their needs and goals. This includes unmounted and mounted instruction because learning to care for a horse can be just as physically and emotionally beneficial as riding. This is a non-therapy program.
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy
This is a type of psychotherapy where a Licensed Professional Counselor determines how equine interactions may enhance a client’s treatment plan and goals. In addition to the Licensed Professional Counselor and horse, there is also an equine professional that works with the treatment team to support the care of the horse and safety of the session.
